Olney Bowling Club

Oct 21   Our AGM provides an opportunity for members to have their say in the way the club is run, the rules that should be in place and to receive feedback from the committee that has seen the club through the current year and learn just how well the club has gone both financially and results wise.   It also provides an opportunity for members to propose changes and to raise any issues they feel require an answer from the committee.

Please note that any motion which a member would like to be presented to the AGM must be proposed and seconded in writing and sent to the Secretary by 5th November 2017.    Also, any member who wishes to be nominated for the committee or role of Lady Captain must send their name along with the name of their proposer and seconder to the Secretary by the same date.   Please note that the Social Sub Committee position is still vacant and at the time of writing,  nominations have been received from Dave Waddell, Jean Cobelli and Sue Rogers.

Aug 24   Congratulations to Mick Richardson who was only a couple of points away from winning through to the final of the Champion of Champions competition at the recent Bowls England National Championships at Leamington Spa.
Having overcome Chris Gale (Lancs) by 5 shots and Ryan Atkins (Hereford) by a single shot, In the semi final, Mick met Russell Francis (Hertfordshire) who was the victor by 21 shots to Micks 20.   Russell met Glen Williams (Wiltshire) but was unable to stop him in a game that saw Glen win by 21 points to 17.
A brilliant performance by Mick which saw him so close to getting into the final - a proud moment for Olney Bowling Club.

July 23   Congratulations to Rory Macdonald, John Ferris and Dave Waddell as for achieving their Level 1 Coaching qualification. The club now has an increasing number of coaches available to help members get the best our of their game so make full use of them.  Meet them at our Coaching Centre , make contact via our Enquiries page or speak to them when you are next at the club and one is around.

July 22   Congratulations to Mick Richardson who won the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire area final of the Champion of Champions.
This morning (Saturday 22/7/17) Mick Richardson beat Adie Twinn of Watlington Bowling Club 21-12 in the area final.  It was great to see a few members of Olney Bowling Club at Watlington to support Mick.  He now progresses to the last 16 at the National Finals at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa on Tuesday 22 August 2017.  His first round match will be at 1200 hours against the area finalist of Cumbria/Durham/Lancashire/Northumberland and Yorkshire.
The committee hope that Mick will be well supported on the day.  Our club should be proud of his achievement.

May 15    After a very successful Open Day and the successful start of our Junior Section which already has fourteen youngsters signed up, we are in need of at least another six or seven coaches.  Rory and Dave Waddell
have put their names forward but more are needed, so if anyone would like to join them on a coaching course, then please let Rory know.  Please remember that you do not have to be an outstanding bowler to attend this course but two or three years of bowling experience would be preferable.

Apr 18   The green and bar will open on Wednesday 19th April, come down and see how it has weathered the winter

Apr 17   Jan Goldsmith has now completed the rotas for Club House Cleaning and Kitchen/Table Duties for the coming season. These are now posted in the clubhouse so please make sure that you take a look and put the dates in your diaries.

Apr 12    Big thanks to the teams who have worked to bring the green, clubhouse and surrounds up to date in preparation for the new season.   New for this year will be the rubber matting which has been installed in the ditches and will keep the grit off the green and bowls.
Our long association with Charles Wells Brewery will see us transferring over to Marstons and with that will come a wider range of beers.   Do come down and try them.

Mar 17 - At the recent Committee meeting, the board adopted the Newport Pagnell & Olney Lions Club as our Charity of the Year.   A number of initiatives will be taking place with donations being generated being given to the Lions.  This is the third year where the club has supported a local charitable organisation (Willen Hospice & William Crooks Brighter Future Fund being the others).   The president of the Lions Club, John Ferris said "it is heartwarming to see one local organisation supporting another within the town and any funds raised by the Bowling club will be put to good use within our local, national and international community".  Find out more about the activities of Lions by visiting their website..

Mar 6 - Olney Bowling Club are keen to introduce a Junior Section to the club.  In order to accomplish this goal, we will need a member or members of the club to be in charge of the organisation of a Junior Section.

Our coaches are keen to help and The Buckinghamshire Bowls Association are in the process of organising a County Junior Section with Open Days, Competitions and Coaching supervised by qualified Bows England coaches and under the watchful eye of John Lonergan, President of the BBA.   This could be good opportunity for the youth of Olney and our club.   If you are interested please contact our club Secretary on 01234 712460.

Jan 8 - Following a recent Council meeting held in Christchurch, New Zealand on 5th December 2016, a proposed amendment to the Laws of the Sport was unanimously approved by the World Bowls Council.   This proposal relates to the grooved rings surrounding the centre of the bowl and effectively removes the requirement to have large grooved rings surrounding the non bias side.   For full details, refer to the email sent by the Secretary to all members dated 7th January.

    Aug 25
    - Congratulations to Olney Oddfellows and Olney Athletic, our two teams who carried the club's colours in the Bucks League for winning their respective Divisions and gaining promotion.  The teams, captained by Dave Waddell and Roland Cleverley took on some fairly strong teams (Newport Belles were described by some of our ladies as one of the top ladies teams in the county being one) and clearly showed that Olney Bowling Club is developing some future champions.

Aug  5 - Both Colin Millward and Wendy Boshi are considering their retirements at the end of the 2016 season.   they have both cone a wonderful job for the club over the years that they have carried out the role and we are very grateful for their efforts.
Obviously it is vital that we have a Ladies and Gents Captain to represent Olney Bowling Club so anyone willing to take on the role should notify Rory as soon as possible.
Please speak to him at the club, email or phone him or use the Enquiries Page on this website to let him know you may be interested.

Jun 29 - An absolutely brilliant day was had by all those taking part in the Charity match against Dennyside Bowling Association.
Starting off with a lunchtime buffet and 'snifter', the game proceeded with all the signs of Dennyside wiping the green with Olney but persistence and patience led to Olney winning the day.   There followed a lovely 2 course meal and the inevitable raffle and a great day was had by all.
Perhaps the most gratifying aspect of the proceedings was the outcome.   As a charity game, raising funds for a very important charity which is dear to the hearts of many in Olney was the purpose and what a success it was, Over £2500 was raised for the William Crook Brighter Future Fund at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the event was organised by Williams Grandfather and Grandmother, Gerald and Jean Wilson.  An email sent to Rory by Gerald and Jean, thanked everyone who was involved for making the day such a success.   For full details of Dennyside Bowling Association and The William Crook Brighter Future fund, take the links.   If you would like to add your own  donation, please do so by visiting the justgiving website page via this direct link..

Jun 22 - Well done everyone in the club who have helped ensure that our hygene rating has remained at the top level of 5 Stars.   A big thanks from the committee to everyone who has helped to keep the Kitchen area clean, tidy and in such good order.

Jun 8 - Congratulations to Phil Cheverton who picked up £590 when his ticket was drawn at our Wednesday club night - and he wasn't even in the clubhouse. Dave Waddell became Phil's proxy and picked envelope #20 which, when opened, saw our joker popping out. A quick trip was made to the Carlton Club where Phil had decanted along with another group of bowlers to take part in the fortnightly quiz, let us formally hand over the dosh, much to the amusement, sorry annoyance (jealous annoyance that is), of the rest of the bowling members who were taking part.   Our third game will commence at Race Night under the rules below.

Jun 2 - Thanks to the success of our Find the Joker game, we are now making some minor changes to the way it works.
With Effect from our Race Night on 10th June, there will be more opportunities to find the elusive joker each time we have a draw.
When we sell a total of 50 tickets, a draw can be run but instead of a single ticket being picked out of the hat, there will be extra chances to win depending on the number of tickets sold since the previous draw.
50 tickets sold will see us having two draws as standard but higher sales will generate additional draws as follows:
75 tickets sold will see us picking 3 tickets, 100 tickets will have 4 selected with an additional ticket being picked for every full 25 tickets sold in any draw,   See the details on our Joker page.

Apr 19  - The opening of the green for play will be Wednesday 20th April when the normal Wednesday evening 'bounce' game will no doubt take place and all members are invited to take part. That evening we are also likely to welcome the Olney Runners back for their 'cool down' drink and on Saturday 23rd, we will have 4 Male & 2 Female teams playing Ampthill at home as the season gets well and truly under way.
Tuesday 26th April sees the start of our points night - if taking part, please be in the clubhouse and signed in to enable a 6:30 draw to be made.

Apr   6  - In order to comply with Fire Safety Regulations we have had the two entry doors to the clubhouse turned around so that they are now opening outwards.
The carpet in the clubhouse has been professionally cleaned for the beginning of the season and I would be grateful if members would use the outdoor mats provided to wipe their shoes on, so that we can keep the carpet as clean as possible.
Don't forget that Membership Renewal Night is on Friday 15 April, so please come along with your forms and rejoin your bowling club.  We have a great summer ahead of us and the committee look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.  Renewals start at 1900 hours and the bar will be open, so apart from taking some money off you there is always time to have a social evening with your fellow bowlers!  If you can't make the evening, then please make sure you return your forms to me by 15 April so that I can process them and enter you for any competitions etc.  Please return to me at 45 Oxleys, Olney, MK46 5PJ.
Finally, a huge "Thank You" to everyone who has been involved in getting the clubhouse and green ready for our opening.  We have done a great deal of work over the past few weeks and without your help all the jobs would not have been completed.  The help you have given to your club in your spare time has been very much appreciated.

Jun 21                           - A note to all club members was sent by President Brian Clifton stating "After more than thirty years as our Hon Club and Company Secretary, John Smail has decided to retire and has passed the reins over to Rory Macdonald.   Looking around our clubhouse, most of what you see owes it's origin to John's imagination and often brawn, for which we must be truly thankful.
We wish John further enjoyment of his bowls and use of our facilities (bar!) and say a very big thank you for all that he has done for the club over many years."
